Red Street Brand Cigarette Ad poster

Red Street Brand Cigarette Ad poster
This Red Street cigarette company advertising poster depicts a lady dressed in an elaborate dress, with a cloak covering her shoulder, her curly short hair and white pearl necklace along with the rest of her attire indicating Western influence in the 1930 Shanghai era. The two sides of the poster had a short Chinese poem written on it, appraising the quality of cigarette.
The sitting monk poster is actually an advertisement for a calming medicine available in the thirties in China. This medicine supposedly had a very strong calming effect. As depicted in this advertisement, a monk is surrounded by seven scantily clad women and not tempted. The message is subtle but would have been clear to someone living at the time.

Kwong Sang Hong Chinese Retro Poster

From the 1920s to mid 1950, China's fascination with the trends of the world was reflected prominently through commercial art. The influences of the West affected the Chinese culture in very profound ways; creating new graphic styles, ideas, and even values. Because these posters are limited reproductions, they are antiqued for that less than perfect condition.

An advertisement for the most popular toiletry distributor in its time, Kwong Sang Hong's beauty products were a favorite among Chinese women. Riding on the retro trend, the images of these two girls are now plastered all over products in Chinatowns around the world.
